Tackling food waste

Perfectly Imperfect

In partnership with our suppliers we work on to reduce food waste in the whole supply chain. That is why we started a program named “Perfectly Imperfect".

We are proud to be part of communities around the world. We are committed to making a real difference to the issues that matter to our customers and colleagues in a number of ways: through the local people we employ, the local businesses we work with, and the local causes we support.

You choose, we help

We want out stores to be a good neighbour and to bring the benefits to the local community. That is why in 2016 we launched the "You choose, we help" programme across Central Europe. The program is a great success due to the commitment of our colleagues and customers.
This year, we have already launched the 6th edition of the programme. In the first 5 rounds we supported more than 500 local projects with more than 14 million votes and almost 150 million Forint. Since the 4th round all applicants entered in the voting phase could receive a grant.

Check out all the projects implemented with the help of the programme!

Colleague volunteering

With today's hectic lifestyles it can be easy to lose sight of the important things, such as fostering a sense of community. That's why we’ve launched new internal volunteering programme – which encourages our colleagues to contribute to their neighbourhoods and local areas.

We are proud to be part of many communities around the world and are committed to making a difference to the causes that matter most to our customers and colleagues. The volunteering pilot is a new initiative, that will allow us to support these local causes even further.

Long term partnership with food banks

In 2017/18 we donated 10,639 tonnes of food to more than 1,100 food bank partners, an increase of over 100% in the last year. It is an equivalent of 25 million meals. 700 stores are donating food on a regular basis and we want to offer food surplus donations from all of our stores by 2020.

We have long history of working with the food banks in Poland and Hungary. We have been central to supporting the development of nationwide food bank networks in Czech Republic and Slovakia.

We are a single largest partner for the food banks in Central Europe and signed a strategic partnership agreement with them in 2016 to work together to strengthen food surplus donation infrastructure in each country.

We enable our customers to support food banks by organising food collections, with a Christmas food collection topped-up by Tesco with 20%. In 2017 our customers helped to collect an equivalent of 1.2 million meals.
